Otile Brown Biography: Kenya’s R&B King, Net Worth, and Full Story (2026)

Jacob Obunga lost both his parents before he turned 14. He was living in Mombasa with no backup plan, no industry connections, and a voice nobody had heard yet. Today Otile Brown runs his own label, has over 2 million Instagram followers, and was the first Kenyan artist to cross 1 million YouTube subscribers.

That gap between those two points is his story.

Quick Facts

Full Name Jacob Obunga
Stage Name Otile Brown / Bad Man Shivo
Date of Birth March 21, 1994
Age 32 (as of 2026)
Born Kisumu
Raised Mombasa
Tribe Luo
Profession Singer, songwriter, label CEO

Early Life

Otile Brown was born in Kisumu on March 21, 1994, but grew up in the Mikindani area of Mombasa. He started writing songs at 13 — not because someone told him to, but because he had nowhere else to put what he was feeling. By 14, both his parents were gone.

He kept singing anyway. He performed at local talent shows around the coast, piecing together a sound that mixed Swahili lyrics with slow, melodic R&B. In 2012 he moved to Nairobi, broke and unknown, doing odd jobs while knocking on studio doors.

Most people said no. He kept going.

Career and Breakthrough

The break came through Jalang’o. The media personality heard something in his voice, paid for his first proper studio session, and connected him with producer Dr. Eddie. From there he signed to Dreamland Music and started releasing singles.

By 2017 he’d had enough of the label. He walked away, took control of his own music, and never looked back. That same year he launched Just In Love Music — his own label, his own rules.

The music did the rest. “Chaguo La Moyo,” “Baby Love,” “Dusuma” — these weren’t just hits, they made Otile Brown the go-to name for anyone who wanted Swahili R&B done properly. In 2022 he became the first Kenyan artist to hit 1 million YouTube subscribers. By 2026 he’s at 1.4 million.

His label has also given a platform to artists like Jovial and Lexsil — though both have since moved on, which generated some talk (more on that below).

Otile Brown’s Net Worth (KES Estimate)

His net worth sits somewhere between KES 80 million and KES 150 million on the conservative side, with some estimates going as high as KES 250 million. Here’s where the money comes from:

  • YouTube — 1.4M subscribers, hundreds of millions of views. Estimated monthly income: KES 800,000+
  • Just In Love Music — as label owner he keeps the full cut instead of paying commission to someone else
  • Live shows — one of the priciest bookings in Kenya; corporate events, concerts, and high-end weddings all pay premium
  • Brand deals — fashion, beverages, and tech brands have come calling given his 2M+ Instagram following
  • Assets — a Nairobi mansion and multiple cars including Mercedes Benz models and a BMW

Relationships and Dating History

Vera Sidika (2018) Kenya’s biggest socialite meets Kenya’s biggest R&B voice — the attention was inevitable. The relationship lasted months before collapsing very publicly. Leaked messages, accusations about money and private matters, public insults on both sides. It divided fans and kept both of them in the headlines for months after.

Nabayet (Nabbi) After Vera came the Ethiopian biomedical student, Nabayet. Their relationship was quieter but still public — long distance, on and off, with declarations of love he later referenced in his music. She has since married someone else.

Who Is Otile Brown Dating in 2026? Earlier this year he reportedly soft-launched a new partner on social media without naming her. In May 2026, a video of him with nominated senator Karen Nyamu at a Nairobi party went viral and sparked dating speculation. Neither has said anything publicly to confirm or deny.

Drama and Controversies

The Dreamland Music Fallout (2017) His split with Dreamland Music wasn’t clean. There were disputes over song rights and contract terms. He eventually walked, went independent, and built something bigger than what he left.

The Vera Sidika Breakup The public fallout was one of the messiest celebrity splits Kenya had seen that year. Messages were leaked, allegations flew, and it took months to die down.

Artist Exits from Just In Love Music When Jovial and Lexsil both left the label, people talked. Questions came up about management style. He has said the splits were professional and mutual.

The Award Snubs He’s turned down major nominations publicly. His position: he’d rather focus on fans and streams than chase trophies. That stance has made some people in the industry uncomfortable.

The Overrated Debate Sauti Sol’s Bensoul and Savara once called him overrated. He responded — directly, without mincing words. Bad Man Shivo has never been one to stay quiet when challenged.

Otile Brown Latest News (Mid-2026)

His most recent single, “Sio Leo” (released May 2026), has been getting heavy rotation on Kenyan radio and streaming. It’s a slower, acoustic-leaning track — stripped back compared to some of his earlier work, with Swahili lyricism that leans into devotion-heavy storytelling his fans know well.

He’s been dropping consistently through 2026 — “Yes I Do,” “I’m Waiting,” and “PM” all came out earlier in the year, keeping him visible on the charts without a big campaign behind each release.

His five-track EP “The Real King of the East” dropped in November 2025 and still pulls streams. It features Jovial on “I Choose You,” The Ben on “For Life,” and Okello Max on “I Love You.”

On the personal side: the Karen Nyamu video is still out there, neither party has commented, and the speculation continues.
